The Modern concrete building was constructed in 1975. It is located on Church Street between North and 1st streets. United States Highway 158 is one block north of the site. Echols-Sparger & Associates provided the building designs. Veteran memorials are across the street. There was an 1858 courthouse earlier in Yanceyville. Caswell County was formed from Orange County on January 1, 1777 as the 35th county. It was named for Governor Richard Caswell. Leasburg was the first county seat. The current county seat is named for settler James Yancey.
Caswell County government consists of a manager, a register, a sheriff, an attorney, and a clerk (executive). It has 7 Commissioners (legislative.) Twenty-one Superior Court Judges serve Caswell, Alexander, Alleghany, Ashe, Cabarrus, Chatham, Davidson, Davie, Forsyth, Guilford, Iredell, Orange, Rockingham, Rowan, Stokes, Surry, Wilkes, and Yadkin counties, Three District Court Judges serve Caswell and Rockingham counties and a court clerk serves Caswell County (judicial.) Caswell County is on the northern border with Virginia. Raleigh, North Carolina is southeast and Greensboro, North Carolina is southwest of the county. The county center is 4.2 miles Southeast of Yanceyville. The county is surrounded clockwise by Virginia and Person, Orange, Alamance, and Rockingham counties.
The area of the county is 429 square miles. It is 63 out of 100 in the state. It ranks 75 out of 100 in population in the state. It has a density of 53.0 persons per square mile making it 77 out of 100 in the state. Caswell County has 9.2% of its population in its incorporated areas. United States Highway 29 clips the northwest corner of the county from Virginia, north to Rockingham County, west. United States Highway 158 passes east to west from Person County to Rockingham County. The county is a rectangle. Yanceyville is located near the center of the county. Yanceyville is the county seat and the largest city. It is 8.5% of the county population.
