The Modern concrete and glass facility was built in 1982 on a hill. It is on North Carolina State Highway 89 at Shepherd Mill Road. Fred W. Butner, Jr., provided the building designs. A 1904 version existed earlier. An Administrative 1992 Building and an Annex support the courthouse. The county was organized on January 1, 1789 from Surry County as the 53rd county. It is named for Revolutionary War hero John Stokes. Danbury was named for a local plantation. Germantown (1790), Forsyth (1849), and Danbury (1851) have all served as the county seat.

Twenty-one Superior Court Judges serve Stokes, Alexander, Alleghany, Ashe, Cabarrus, Caswell, Chatham, Davidson, Davie, Forsyth, Guilford, Iredell, Orange, Rockingham, Rowan, Surry, Wilkes, and Yadkin counties, Five District Court Judges serve Stokes and Surry counties and a court clerk serves Stokes County (judicial.) Stokes County is on the northern border with Virginia. Greensboro, North Carolina is southeast and Asheville, North Carolina is southwest of the county. The center of the county is 2.1 miles Northwest of Danbury. The county is surrounded clockwise by Virginia and Rockingham, Guilford, Forsyth, and Surry counties.
The area of the county is 453 square miles. It is 57 out of 100 in the state. It ranks 57 out of 100 in population in the state. It has a density of 98.3 persons per square mile making it 54 out of 100 in the state. Stokes County has 18.8% of its population in its incorporated areas. Interstate Highway 74 cuts the southwest corner of the county from Surry County, west, to Forsyth County, south. United States Highway 52 is joined with Interstate Highway 74 from Surry to Forsyth counties. United States Highway 311 goes from Rockingham County, east, to Forsyth County, south. Stokes County is a rectangle. Danbury is located near the center of the county. King is in the southwest corner of the county and extends into Forsyth County. Danbury is the county seat and King is the largest city. Danbury is 0.4% of the county population while King is 16.2% of the county population. This county is in the Winston-Salem Metropolitan Statistical Area.
