The Modern concrete and red brick facility was built in 1972. It is at the corner of 2nd, Main, 3rd, and South streets. United States Highway 52 Business passes one block to the east of the site. Williams and Associates provided the designs. Veteran memorials are on the grounds. There was an 1893 version earlier. The county was established on January 1, 1841 from parts of Montgomery County as the 72nd county with Albemarle as the only county seat. Stanly County is named for United States Congressman John Stanly. The county seat is named for the Duke of Albemarle.

The county is in south central North Carolina. Greensboro, North Carolina is north and Charlotte, North Carolina is southwest of the county. The center of the county is 5 miles Southwest of Albemarle. The county is surrounded clockwise by Rowan, Davidson, Montgomery, Anson, Union, and Cabarrus counties.
The area of the county is 405 square miles. It is 67 out of 100 in the state. It ranks 43 out of 100 in population in the state. It has a density of 154.3 persons per square mile making it 36 out of 100 in the state. Stanly County has 49.8% of its population in its incorporated areas. United States Highway 52 passes northwest to southeast in the county from Cabarrus County to Anson County. The county looks like a bag of trash. Albemarle is located slightly east of center in the county. Albemarle is the county seat and the largest city. It is 26.3% of the county population. The county seat is pronounced AL-BE-MARL. This county is in the Albemarle Micropolitan Statistical Area.
