The Modern tan brick and concrete courthouse, southwest of the city at Government Center and Court House drives, was built in 2002. United States Highway 17 Business is one block southeast of the location. Freeman White, Inc., and Ware Sonsall Architects provided the designs. The building features columns and veteran memorials. Southport had the 1844 version of the courthouse. Brunswick County was established on January 1, 1764 from Bladen and New Hanover counties as the 27th county. Brunswick (1764), Lockwood Folly (1779), Southport (1808), and Bolivia (1978) have all served as the county seat. The county is named for the Duke of Brunswick. The county seat is named for the country. Brunswick County was the birthplace for 1 North Carolina Governor, Daniel L. Russell, Jr.

The county is on the southeast coast bordering South Carolina. Fayetteville, North Carolina is northwest and Charleston, South Carolina is southwest of the county. The county center is 7.5 miles Southwest of Bolivia nearer Supply. The county is surrounded clockwise by Pender and New Hanover counties and the Atlantic Ocean and South Carolina and Columbus County.

United States Highways 74/76 are joined from New Hanover County, northeast, to Columbus County, northwest. The county resembles a roller skate facing southwest. Bolivia is located in the eastern third of the county. Leland is on the northern border of the county. Bolivia is the county seat and Leland is the largest city. Bolivia is 0.1% of the county population while Leland is 17.1% of the county population. This county is in the Wilmington Metropolitan Statistical Area.
