A red brick Modern building was built in 1996.  It sits on North Carolina State Highway 343 to the northwest of United States Highway 158.  The building architect is unknown.  The 1848 courthouse sits beside the current courthouse.  An Administration Center is under construction in 2021 across the street.  Veterans are honored on the grounds.  The county was created on January 1, 1777 from Pasquotank County as the 34th county with Camden as the only county seat.  The county and county seat are named for Lord Camden. 

Camden County government consists of a manager, a register, a sheriff, an attorney, and a clerk (executive).  It has 5 Commissioners (legislative.)  Sixteen Superior Court Judges serve Camden, Beaufort, Bertie, Chowan, Currituck, Dare, Durham, Edgecombe, Franklin, Gates, Granville, Halifax, Hertford, Hyde, Martin, Nash, Northampton, Pasquotank, Perquimans, Person, Pitts, Tyrrell, Vance, Warren, Washington, and Wilson counties, One District Court Judge serves Camden, Chowan, Currituck, Dare, Gates, Pasquotank, and Perquimans counties and a court clerk serves Camden County (judicial.)  Camden County is on the northeast border with Virginia.  Norfolk, Virginia is directly north and Raleigh, North Carolina is southwest of the county.  The county center is 1.9 miles Northeast of Camden.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Virginia and Currituck, Tyrrell, Pasquotank, and Gates counties. 

The area of the county is 310 square miles.  It is 85 out of 100 in the state.  It ranks 96 out of 100 in population in the state.  It has a density of 33.4 persons per square mile making it 88 out of 100 in the state.  Camden County has 0.4% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 17 enters the county from Virginia, north, and exits into Pasquotank County, southwest.  United States Highway 158 travels east to west from Currituck County to Pasquotank County.  The county is shaped like a backward diagonal.  The Town of Camden is located on the southwest border of the county.  Camden is the county seat and the largest populated area although it is unincorporated.  It is 6.0% of the county population.  Elizabeth City extends into Camden County and accounts for the small incorporated area percentage.  This county is in the Elizabeth City Micropolitan Statistical Area.
