The Modern red brick and concrete building was constructed in 1974 featuring columns. It is located on a square Union Street, Means Avenue, Church Street, and Corban Avenue. Means Avenue is United States Highway 601 Business in this part of town. George A. Griffin is the courthouse architect. A classic 1875 courthouse sits next door in Concord, the only county seat. An Administration building was added in 1990. The grounds were under renovation in 2021. Cabarrus County was organized on December 29, 1792 from Mecklenburg County as the 58th county. It is named for North Carolina Speaker of the House Stephen Cabarrus. The county seat is named for an agreement on the location of the community. Cabarrus County was the birthplace for 1 North Carolina Governor, Nathaniel Alexander.

Cabarrus County is in the southern part of the state. Charlotte, North Carolina is directly southwest and Greensboro, North Carolina is northeast of the county. The county center is in Concord .7 miles Southeast of the city center. The county is surrounded clockwise by Rowan, Stanly, Union, Mecklenburg, and Iredell counties.

Interstate Highway 85 crosses through the county from northeast to southwest from Rowan County to Mecklenburg County. United States Highway 29 parallels Interstate Highway 85 from Rowan to Mecklenburg counties. United States Highway 52 clips the northeast corner from Rowan County, north, to Stanly County, east. United States Highway 601 is joined with Interstate Highway 85 from Rowan County, splits, and goes south into Union County. The county is an overall triangle shape. Concord is located in the northwest quarter of the county. Concord is the county seat and the largest city. It is 46.6% of the county population. The county is pronounced KAB-A-RUS. This county is in the Charlotte-Gastonia-Concord Metropolitan Statistical Area.
