The tan brick courthouse was built in 1942 on Maple Street between 3rd and 4th streets.  It is three blocks north of United States Highway 82.  An 1890 courthouse was also located in Lewisville.  Chickaninny Prairie was the county seat until 1840.  Clippard and Vaught were the architects for this Art Deco style courthouse.  An Administration Building was added in 1974.  Judge Lewis B. Fort was the name source of Lewisville.  The county was named for the American Revolution hero, the Marquis of Lafayette.  Lafayette County was originally part of Hempstead County but separated on October 15, 1827 as the 14th county. 

Lafayette County government consists of a sheriff, assessor, treasurer, and coroner (executive).  It has 9 Quorum Court members (legislative.)  Three Circuit Court Judges serve Lafayette and Miller counties and a District Court Judge, an Attorney, and a County Clerk serve Lafayette County (judicial.)  The county is in the southwest part of the state just east of Texarkana, Arkansas.  Louisiana borders the county on the south.  The Red River is the western border of the county.  The center of the county is 8 miles South-Southwest of Lewisville nearer Canfield.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Hempstead, Nevada, and Columbia counties and Louisiana and Miller County. The county is shaped like a small r with an extension on the southwest corner.  Lewisville is in the northern third of the county.  Stamps is in the northeast corner of the county.  Lewisville is the county seat and Stamps is the largest city.  Lewisville is 14.4% of the county population while Stamps is 20.0% of the county population.

The area of the county is 545.1 square miles.  It is 75 of 75 in size.  It ranks 73 out of 75 in population in the state.  It has a density of 11.6 persons per square mile making it 68 out of 75 in the state.  Lafayette County has 43.5% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 82 goes east to west from Columbia County to Miller County.
