The modern red brick courthouse in Prescott is located on a square 2nd, Elm, 3rd, and Vine streets. The site is on United States Highway 371. This facility was built in 1964. Weaver and Hiegel were the designers for the Modern style courthouse. Prescott has been the location for two previous courthouses in 1884 and 1912. Mount Moriah (1871), Rosston (1872), and Prescott (1877) have all served as county seats. The State of Nevada was the basis for this county’s name. The county seat was named for American Revolutionary Colonel William Prescott who fought at Bunker Hill. Nevada County was created on March 20, 1871 from parts of Columbia, Hempstead, and Ouachita counties as the 62nd county.
Nevada County government consists of a sheriff, assessor, treasurer, and coroner (executive). It has 9 Quorum Court members (legislative.) Two Circuit Court Judges serve Nevada and Hempstead counties and a District Court Judge, an Attorney, and a County Clerk serve Nevada County (judicial.) The county is situated in southwest Arkansas. The Little River forms its northern border. Little Rock, Arkansas is northeast and Texarkana, Arkansas is southwest. The center of the county is 13 miles South-Southeast of Prescott nearer Laneburg. The county is surrounded clockwise by Clark, Ouachita, Columbia, Lafayette, Hempstead, and Pike counties. A tall rectangle shape for three sides of the county with the top declining from west to east describes the county. Prescott is in the northwest quarter of the county. Prescott is the county seat and the largest city. It is 37.3% of the county population.
The area of the county is 620.8 square miles. It is 52 of 75 in size. It ranks 66 out of 75 in population in the state. It has a density of 13.4 persons per square mile making it 64 out of 75 in the state. Nevada County has 50.9% of its population in its incorporated areas. The Interstate Highway 30 crosses the northern part of the county from Clark County, east, into Hempstead County, west. United States Highway 67 parallels Interstate Highway 30 from Clark County to Hempstead County. United States Highway 278 crosses the southern part of the county from east to west, Ouachita County to Hempstead County. United States Highway 371 enters from Hempstead County in the northwest and exits south into Columbia County. The county is in the Hope Micropolitan Statistical Area.
