The red brick courthouse was built in 1996 in Modern style.  It is situated at Huston at 1st Street.  United States Highway Business 71 is one block east of the site.  There were 1904 and 1934 versions of the courthouse in Waldron, the only county seat.  Perkins and Associates designed the current courthouse.  Judge Andrew Scott is the namesake of the county.  The county seat was named after W. P. Waldron who was the surveyor for the town site.  Scott County was created on November 5, 1833 from parts of Crawford and Pope counties as the 27th county. 

Scott County government consists of a sheriff, assessor, treasurer, and coroner (executive).  It has 9 Quorum Court members (legislative.)  Three Circuit Court Judges serve Scott, Conway, Logan, and Yell counties and a District Court Judge, an Attorney, and a County Clerk serve Scott County (judicial.)  The county is located in the far west part of the state.  Oklahoma is the western border and Fort Smith, Arkansas lies north of the county.  The center of the county is 8.5 miles East of Waldron.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Sebastian, Logan, Yell, Montgomery, and Polk counties and Oklahoma.  The county is basically a rectangle.  Waldron is near to the center in the county.  Waldron is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 34.4% of the county population.

The area of the county is 898.1 square miles.  It is 9 of 75 in size.  It ranks 63 out of 75 in population in the state.  It has a density of 10.9 persons per square mile making it 69 out of 75 in the state.  Scott County has 38.2% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 71 enters from the north, Sebastian County, and exits to the south, Polk County.  United States Highway 270 comes from Montgomery County on the southeast, joins United States Highway 71, and goes into Polk County.
