The stone courthouse sits on the town square at Main Street, Peabody, Howard, and Washington avenues.  Main Street is Arkansas State Highway 14 passing through the city.  It was built in 1922 in Classical Revival style.  The building designer is Clyde A. Ferrell.  It is the only courthouse built in Mountain View, the only county seat.  The origin of the county’s name is the stony terrain.  Mountain View is a geographical term for the view of the mountains from the city site.  On April 21, 1873 parts of Izard, Independence, Van Buren, and Searcy counties were combined to form Stone County as the 73rd county.  The Buffalo River forms the eastern border of the county. 

Stone County government consists of a sheriff, assessor, treasurer, and coroner (executive).  It has 9 Quorum Court members (legislative.)  Four Circuit Court Judges serve Stone, Cleburne, Fulton, Independence, and Izard counties and a District Court Judge, an Attorney, and a County Clerk serve Stone County (judicial.)  The county is in the north central part of the state.   Little Rock, Arkansas is South of the county.  The center of the county is 11.6 miles Southwest of Mountain View nearer Fox.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Baxter, Izard, Independence, Cleburne, Van Buren, and Searcy counties.  The county is a shaped like a delta with its northwest top missing.  The river forms a wavy side to the delta.  Mountain View is south of the county center.  Mountain View is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 23.2% of the county population.

The area of the county is 609.4 square miles.  It is 57 of 75 in size.  It ranks 55 out of 75 in population in the state.  It has a density of 20.3 persons per square mile making it 54 out of 75 in the state.  Stone County has 24.5% of its population in its incorporated areas.  There are no Interstates or United States Highways in the county.
