The governmental structure was built in 1932 from masonry and is on a square at 3rd, Stillwell, 4th and De Queen streets.  Stillwell Street is United States Highway Business 70 when it passes in front of the courthouse.  Witt, Seibert, and Halsey provided the Classical Revival designs.  There were additions in 1955 and 1975.  There was another courthouse in De Queen built in 1905.  Paraclifta (1829), Lockesport (1871), and De Queen (1905) have all been the county seat.  United States Senator Ambrose H. Sevier is the namesake for the county.  De Queen was named for Dutch railroad investor De Goijen.  A portion of Hempstead County was used on October 18, 1828 to create Sevier County as the 15th county.  The Saline River is the eastern border, the Little River is the southern border, and Oklahoma is on the western border of this county. 

Sevier County government consists of a sheriff, assessor, treasurer, and coroner (executive).  It has 9 Quorum Court members (legislative.)  Two Circuit Court Judges serve Sevier, Howard, Little River, and Pike counties and a District Court Judge, an Attorney, and a County Clerk serve Sevier County (judicial.)  It is located north of Texarkana, Arkansas in southwest Arkansas.  The center of the county is 5 miles East of De Queen.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Polk, Howard, Hempstead, and Little River counties and Oklahoma.  The county is a lazy L with wavy south and east borders.  De Queen is in the northwest quarter of the county.  De Queen is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 38.5% of the county population.  The county is pronounced SE-VEER.  The county seat is pronounced DI QUEEN.

The area of the county is 581.4 square miles.  It is 68 of 75 in size.  It ranks 49 out of 75 in population in the state.  It has a density of 27.3 persons per square mile making it 37 out of 75 in the state.  Sevier County has 50.0% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highways 59/71 cross north to south, Polk County to Little River County.  United States Highway 70 goes east to west from Howard County to Oklahoma.  United States Highway 371 enters from the east, Howard County, and terminates in the county.
