The old stone Romanesque Revival courthouse was constructed in 1903.  The facility is on Main Street between 50 North and 100 North streets.  Utah State Highway 133 is 100 North Street and then turns to become Main Street at the courthouse.  E. J. Beggs and J. H. Salmon were the designers.  The building was enlarged in 1977 and an augmenting Courthouse was built in Park City.  The county was created on January 13, 1854 as the 11th county.  Wanship was the original county seat until 1872 when Coalville assumed the role.  The county was named for its mountainous location.  Coalville is named for local coal deposits. 

Summit County government consists of a sheriff and 3 Commissioners.  Twenty-seven District Court Judges and Ten Juvenile Court Judges serve Summit, Salt Lake, and Tooele counties.  The county is located on the northern border with Wyoming.  Salt Lake City, Utah is west and Grand Junction, Colorado is southeast of the county.  The county center is 19.6 miles Southeast of Coalville nearer Oakley.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Wyoming and Daggett, Duchesne, Wasatch, Utah, Salt Lake, Morgan, and Rich counties. 

The area of the county is 1882 square miles.  It is 18 out of 29 in the state.  It ranks 10 out of 29 in population in the state.  It has a density of 19.30 persons per square mile making it 8 out of 29 in the state.  Summit County has 38.6% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 80 travels east to west in the county from Wyoming to Salt Lake County.  Interstate Highway 84 originates and heads northwest into Morgan County.  United States Highways 40/189 originate and head south into Wasatch County.  The county looks like a cannon.  Coalville is located in the western quarter of the county.  Park City is in the southwest corner of the county and extends into Wasatch County.  Coalville is the county seat and Park City is the largest city.  Coalville is 3.8% of the county population while Park City is 20.8% of the county population.  This county is in the Salt Lake City Metropolitan Statistical Area.
