The Modern 2007 concrete and tan brick courthouse replaced a 1974 version.  The 1974 courthouse remains as the County Administration Building.  The courthouse is 1^st and 100 South streets.  MHTN Architects designed the courthouse.  A Justice Center was added in Grantsville in 2017.  Utah State Highway 36 is one block west of the courthouse.  Tooele County was formed on January 31, 1850 as an original county (4^th county) with Tooele as the only county seat.  The county and its county seat are reportedly named for a Native American chief. 

Tooele County government consists of a sheriff and 3 Commissioners.  Twenty-seven District Court Judges and Ten Juvenile Court Judges serve Tooele, Salt Lake, and Summit counties.  The county is on the western border with Nevada.  Salt Lake City, Utah is east and Las Vegas, Nevada is southwest of the county.  The county center is 47.1 miles West-Southwest of Tooele nearer Lakeside.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Box Elder, Weber, Davis, Salt Lake, Utah, and Juab counties and Nevada. 

The area of the county is 6941 square miles.  It is 2 out of 29 in the state.  It ranks 7 out of 29 in population in the state.  It has a density of 10.5 persons per square mile making it 14 out of 29 in the state.  Tooele County has 69.9% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 80 travels east to west through the county from Salt Lake County to Nevada.  The county looks like a trash can lying on its right side.  The City of Tooele is located near the eastern border of the county.  Tooele is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 49.2% of the county population.  The county and county seat are pronounced TOO-WEL-A.  This county is in the Salt Lake City Metropolitan Statistical Area.
