The current Modern courthouse was constructed in 1942 of yellow brick and stucco.  The facility is on Main Street at Church Street.  Utah State Highway 16 is Main Street in the town.  Ashton & Evans are the building architects.  Rich County was created on January 16, 1864 from Cache County as the 18^th county.  St. Charles was the first county seat until 1872 when Randolph assumed the role.  The county is named for Mormon leader Charles C. Rich.  The county seat is presumably named for a settler. 

Rich County government consists of a sheriff and 3 Commissioners.  Three District Court Judges and One Juvenile Court Judge serve Rich, Box Elder, and Cache counties.  The county is in the northeast corner of the state on the border with both Idaho and Wyoming.  Salt Lake City, Utah is southwest and Boise, Idaho is northwest of the county.  The county center is 5.9 miles Southwest of Randolph.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Idaho and Wyoming and Summit, Morgan, Weber, and Cache counties. 

The area of the county is 1029 square miles.  It is 23 out of 29 in the state.  It ranks 26 out of 29 in population in the state.  It has a density of 2.4 persons per square mile making it 21 out of 29 in the state.  Rich County has 61.4% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 89 enters from the north, Idaho, and exits to the west, Cache County.  The county resembles a two pronged hook.  Randolph is located slightly east of center in the county.  Garden City is in the northwest corner of the county.  Randolph is the county seat and Garden City is the largest city.  Randolph is 18.7% of the county population while Garden City is 24.0% of the county population.
