The Neo-Classical masonry structure was erected in 1926.  There was also an 1872 facility earlier.  The courthouse is sited on University Street between Center and 100 South streets.  United States Highway 189 is University Street in this part of the town.  Joseph Nelson was the courthouse designer.  An Administration Building was built in 1988 and a Justice Building was added in 2004.  The county was founded on January 31, 1850 as an original county (5th county) and Provo has always been the county seat.  The county name is derived from the Native American tribe as is the state’s name.  Provo is named for explorer Etienne Provost.  Utah County is the birthplace of 3 Utah Governors, George D. Clyde, Gary R. Herbert, and Spencer J. Cox. 

Utah County government consists of a sheriff and 3 Commissioners.  Fourteen District Court Judges and Fourteen Juvenile Court Judges serve Utah, Juab, Millard, and Wasatch counties.  Utah County is in north central Utah.  Salt Lake City, Utah is directly north and Las Vegas, Nevada is southwest of the county.  The county center is 6.7 miles South of Provo in Springville.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Salt Lake, Summit, Wasatch, Duchesne, Carbon, Sanpete, Juab, and Tooele counties. 

The area of the county is 2003 square miles.  It is 16 out of 29 in the state.  It ranks 2 out of 29 in population in the state.  It has a density of 329.2 persons per square mile making it 4 out of 29 in the state.  Utah County has 98.8% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 15 crosses through the county from north to southwest from Salt Lake County to Juab County.  United States Highway 6 passes east to west from Carbon County to Juab County.  United States Highway 89 parallels Interstate Highway 15 from Salt Lake County to Sanpete County.  United States Highway 189 enters from Wasatch County and terminates.  The county resembles a short-necked boot with a heel.  Provo is located in the western third of the county.  Provo is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 17.5% of the county population.  The county seat is pronounced PROE-VOE.  This county is in the Provo-Orem Metropolitan Statistical Area.
