The red brick Modern facility was constructed in 1959. There was a traditional 1900 courthouse previously. The facility is located on Main Street between 100 East and 200 East streets. United States Highway 40 is Main Street in this part of the town. Lorenzo and Young provided the designs. The building was enlarged in 1984 and remodeled in 1986. The grounds feature veteran memorials and a helicopter. The county was established on February 18, 1880 as the 23rd county with Vernal as the only county seat. Uintah County is named for the Native American tribe. The county seat name is derived from the Latin for “Spring.”
Uintah County government consists of a sheriff and 3 Commissioners. Four District Court Judges and Two Juvenile Court Judges serve Uintah, Daggett, and Duchesne counties. The county is on the eastern border with Colorado. Salt Lake City, Utah is northwest and Grand Junction, Colorado is southeast of the county. The county center is 26.2 miles South of Vernal nearer Ouray. The county is surrounded clockwise by Daggett County and Colorado and Grand, Emery, Carbon, and Duchesne counties.
The area of the county is 4499 square miles. It is 6 out of 29 in the state. It ranks 11 out of 29 in population in the state. It has a density of 7.24 persons per square mile making it 16 out of 29 in the state. Uintah County has 33.3% of its population in its incorporated areas. United States Highway 40 crosses the county from east to west from Colorado to Duchesne County. United States Highway 191 enters from Daggett County, north, and joins United States Highway 40 into Duchesne County. The county resembles an industrial building with smokestacks. Vernal is located in the northern third of the county. Vernal is the county seat and the largest city. It is 27.9% of the county population. The county is pronounced UE-IN-TA. This county is in the Vernal Micropolitan Statistical Area.
