The Modern masonry facility replaced a classier 1891 building.  The new courthouse was constructed in 1999.  The courthouse is on State Street between Westminster and Redondo avenues.  United States Highway 89 is State Street in this part of the city.  MHTN Architects and Hellmuth, Obata, and Kassabaum combined on the courthouse designs.  A 1986 Government Center augments the courthouse.  The county was formed on January 31, 1850 as an original county (2nd county.)  Salt Lake City has always been the county seat.  Salt Lake County and its county seat are named for the Great Salt Lake.  Salt Lake County is the birthplace of 2 Utah Governors, Heber M. Wells and Norman H. Bangerter. 

Salt Lake County government consists of a sheriff and 3 Commissioners.  Twenty-seven District Court Judges and Ten Juvenile Court Judges serve Salt Lake, Summit, and Tooele counties.  Salt Lake County is in the northern part of Utah.  Boise, Idaho is northwest and Las Vegas, Nevada is southwest of the county.  The county center is 8.9 miles South-Southwest of Salt Lake City in Taylorsville.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Davis, Morgan, Summit, Wasatch, Utah, and Tooele counties. 

The area of the county is 742 square miles.  It is 25 out of 29 in the state.  It ranks 1 out of 29 in population in the state.  It has a density of 1597.4 persons per square mile making it 1 out of 29 in the state.  Salt Lake County has 99.1% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 15 crosses through the county from north to south from Davis County to Utah County.  Interstate Highway 80 enters from Summit County, east, and exits to Tooele County, west.  United States Highway 89 comes from Davis County, north, and joins Interstate Highway 15 into Utah County.  The Utah state capitol is located in this county.  The county is shaped like a letter V leaning east.  Salt Lake City dominates the northern part of the county.  Salt Lake City is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 16.9% of the county population.  This county is in the Salt Lake City Metropolitan Statistical Area.
