The Modern red brick building was built in 1957. There was a 1908 facility earlier. The building is on Main Street at South 100 East. United States Highway 6 Business is one block to the north. Scott P. Evans Architects are the building designers. A new courthouse was planned for completion in 2015. Carbon County was founded on March 8, 1894 from Emery County as the 27th county with Price as the only county seat. The county is named for the coal deposits in the area. The county seat is named for explorer William Price. Carbon County is the birthplace of 1 Utah Governor, J. Bracken Lee.
Carbon County government consists of a sheriff and 3 Commissioners. One District Court Judge and Two Juvenile Court Judges serve Carbon, Emery, Grand, and San Juan counties. The county is in the eastern part of Utah. Salt Lake City, Utah is northwest and Grand Junction, Colorado is southeast of the county. The county center is 9.9 miles Northeast of Price. The county is surrounded clockwise by Duchesne, Uintah, Grand, Emery, Sanpete, and Utah counties.

It has a density of 13.8 persons per square mile making it 12 out of 29 in the state. Carbon County has 66.2% of its population in its incorporated areas. United States Highway 6 travels through the county from north to south from Utah County to Emery County. United States Highway 191 enters from the northeast, Duchesne County, and joins United States Highway 6 into Emery County. The county looks like a flat bowl. Price is located in the western third of the county. Price is the county seat and the largest city. It is 40.2% of the county population. This county is in the Price Micropolitan Statistical Area.
