The Classical Revival courthouse has a dome and is built of tan brick.  It was constructed in 1857 and remodeled in 1887 and 1910.  It was enlarged in 1960.  It is on Main Street at Forest Street.  Main Street is Interstate Highway 15 Business in this part of the town.  William Wrighton, D. M. Burbanks, Peter Baird, Lars Stranquist, and Joshua Holland combined on the designs.  A Judicial Building was built in 2007 and a Justice Court Building was added in 2010.  The county was formed on January 5, 1856 from Weber County as the 13th county with Brigham City as the only county seat.  Box Elder County is named for the local trees.  The county seat is named for Mormon Church founder Brigham Young. 

Box Elder County government consists of a sheriff and 3 Commissioners.  Three District Court Judges and One Juvenile Court Judge serve Box Elder, Cache, and Rich counties.  The county is located in the northwest corner of the state.  Idaho is on its northern border and Nevada is on its western border.  Salt Lake City, Utah is southeast and Boise, Idaho is northwest of the county.  The county center is 46.4 miles West of Brigham City nearer Promontory.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Idaho and Cache, Weber, Davis, and Tooele counties and Nevada. 

The area of the county is 6714 square miles.  It is 4 out of 29 in the state.  It ranks 8 out of 29 in population in the state.  It has a density of 7.44 persons per square mile making it 15 out of 29 in the state.  Box Elder County has 81.6% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 15 enters the county from the north, Idaho, and exits to the south, Weber County.  Interstate Highway 84 comes in from Idaho, northwest, and joins Interstate Highway 15 into Weber County.  United States Highway 89 passes from Cache County, east, to Weber County, south.  United States Highway 91 is joined with United States Highway 89 and terminates.  The county looks like a baby bottle lying on its side.  Brigham City is located in the southeast quarter of the county.  Brigham City is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 35.8% of the county population.  The county seat is pronounced BRIG-UM SI-TEE.  This county is in the Brigham City Micropolitan Statistical Area.
