The Modern red and brown brick courthouse replaced the 1903 wooden facility. It was built in 1996 using the designs of Kevin Madsen and Kyle Harris. The courthouse is on Main Street at Scotts Lane. United States Highway 89 is Main Street in the town. The county was organized on January 16, 1865 from Beaver County as the 19th county. Circleville (1865), Bullon City (1869), Marysvale (1880), and Junction (1888) have all been the county seat. It is named for the Native American tribe. Junction is a geographical name for its location at the junction of two rivers.

The county is located in southern Utah. Salt Lake City, Utah is north and Las Vegas, Nevada is southwest of the county. The county center is 16.1 miles Northeast of Junction nearer Alunite. The county is surrounded clockwise by Sevier, Wayne, Garfield, and Beaver counties.

It has a density of 1.9 persons per square mile making it 25 out of 29 in the state. Piute County has 87.4% of its population in its incorporated areas. United States Highway 89 crosses through the county from north to south from Sevier County to Garfield County. The county resembles an anvil. Junction is located in the southern quarter of the county. Circleville is near the southwest border of the county. Junction is the county seat and Circleville is the largest city. Junction is 14.9% of the county population while Circleville is 38.3% of the county population. The county is pronounced PIE-OOT.
