The tan brick Art Deco courthouse was built in 1938.  The structure is on Main Street at North 100 East Street.  Utah State Highway 10 is Main Street in the town.  The courthouse was designed by Cannon and Fetzer.  The county was established on February 12, 1880 as an original county as the 21^st county with Castle Dale as the only county seat.  Emery County is named for Territorial Governor George W. Emery.  The county seat name is a description of the surrounding mountains. 

Emery County government consists of a sheriff and 3 Commissioners.  One District Court Judge and Two Juvenile Court Judges serve Emery, Carbon, Grand, and San Juan counties.  Emery County is located in eastern Utah.  Salt Lake City, Utah is northwest and Grand Junction, Colorado is east of the county.  The county center is 20.8 miles Southeast of Castle Dale.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Carbon, Uintah, Grand, Wayne, Sevier, and Sanpete counties. 

The area of the county is 4462 square miles.  It is 7 out of 29 in the state.  It ranks 19 out of 29 in population in the state.  It has a density of 2.46 persons per square mile making it 21 out of 29 in the state.  Emery County has 83.3% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 70 travels east to west through the county from Grand County to Sevier County.  United States Highways 6/191 are joined with Interstate Highway 70 from Grand County, split and go north into Carbon County.  United States Highway 50 is joined with Interstate Highway 70 from Grand to Sevier counties.  The county resembles a fat overstuffed chair with a short back.  Castle Dale is located in the northwest quarter of the county.  Huntington is northeast of Castle Dale.  Castle Dale is the county seat and Huntington is the largest city.  Castle Dale is 14.9% of the county population while Huntington is 19.4% of the county population.
