The masonry Art Deco facility was constructed in 1938. It is located at the intersection of Pioche and 4th streets. United States Highway 93 is two blocks to the northeast of the location. A. Lacy Worswick is the architect. There was an 1872 version of the courthouse also in Pioche. The county was created on January 1, 1866 from Nye County as the 11th county. Crystal Springs (1867), Hiko (1867), and Pioche (1871) have all been the county seat. Lincoln County is named for United States President Abraham Lincoln. The county seat is named for financier Francois Louis Alfred Pioche.
Lincoln County government consists of a manager, a sheriff, an attorney, a treasurer and a clerk (executive). It has 5 Commissioners (legislative.) Two District Court Judges serve Lincoln, Eureka and White Pine counties and Two Justice Court Judges serve Lincoln County (judicial.) The county is located on the southeast border with Utah and Arizona. Las Vegas, Nevada is directly south of the county. The county center is 27.4 miles South-Southwest of Pioche nearer Caliente. The county is surrounded clockwise by White Pine County and Utah and Arizona and Clark and Nye counties.
The area of the city is 10635 square miles. It is 3 out of 17 in the state. It ranks 14 out of 17 in population in the state. It has a density of 0.4 persons per square mile making it 16 out of 17 in the state. Lincoln County has 22.0% of its population in its incorporated areas. United States Highway 93 travels north to south in the county from White Pine County to Clark County. The county is shaped like a fat capital letter J. Pioche is in the northeast quarter of the county. Caliente is in the eastern third of the county. Pioche is the county seat and Caliente is the largest city since it is the only incorporated city. Pioche is 20.7% of the county population although it is unincorporated. Caliente is 22.0% of the county population. The county seat is pronounced PIE-OSH. The largest city is pronounced KAL-EE-EN-TAE.
