The 1875 red brick Italianate courthouse is located on B Street between Union and Taylor streets. The site is one block west of Nevada State Highway 341 in the town. Kenitzer and Raun provided the building designs. The county is an original county (7th county) organized on November 25, 1861 with Virginia City as the only county seat. It is named for Calvary Captain Edward Farris Storey. Virginia City is named for settler “Old Virginia” Fennimore. Storey County was the birthplace for 3 Nevada Governors, Emmet D. Boyle, Frederick B. Balzar, and Richard Kirman, Sr.

Reno, Nevada is directly north of the county. The county center is 9.8 miles Northeast of Virginia City. The county is surrounded clockwise by Washoe and Lyon counties and Carson City.
