The Modern red brick courthouse was built in 1999 to replace a 1922 structure.  The building is on Musser Street at Pratt Street.  United States Highway 395 is eight blocks west of the site.  Daniel, Mann, Johnson & Mendenhall are the building architects.  The independent city was founded on November 25, 1861 as Ormsby County as an original county (1st county.)  In 1969, it became the independent city of Carson City.  Carson City has always been the county seat.  It is named for explorer Kit Carson. 

Carson City government consists of a mayor, a sheriff, an attorney, a treasurer and a clerk (executive).  It has 5 Supervisors (legislative.)  Two District Court Judges serve Carson City and Storey County and One Justice Court Judge and a court clerk serve Carson City (judicial.)  Carson City is on the western border with California.  Reno, Nevada is north and Las Vegas, Nevada is southeast of the city.  The city center is .4 miles West of the downtown.  The city is surrounded clockwise by Washoe, Storey, Lyon, and Douglas counties and California. 

The area of the city is 144 square miles.  It is 17 out of 17 in the state.  It ranks 4 out of 17 in population in the state.  It has a density of 407.3 persons per square mile making it 1 out of 17 in the state.  Carson City has 100.0% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 50 crosses the city from east to south from Lyon County to Douglas County.  United States Highway 395 goes north to south from Washoe County to Douglas County.  The Nevada state capitol is located in this county.  The city is shaped like a funnel facing west.  This city is in the Carson City Metropolitan Statistical Area.  Carson City is an independent city therefore it is 100.0% of its population.
