The masonry Neo-Classical and Italianate courthouse was constructed in 1909. It is on a square at Clark, 8th, Aultman, and 9th streets. United States Highway 50 is Aultman Street in the town. George T. Beardslee is the building designer. The county was formed on March 5, 1869 from Lander County as the 13th county. It is named for the local trees. The first county seat was in Hamilton. Ely became county seat in 1887 and is named for businessman Smith Ely.

Two District Court Judges serve White Pine, Eureka and Lincoln counties and Two Justice Court Judges serve White Pine County (judicial.) The county is on the eastern border with Utah. Las Vegas, Nevada is south and Salt Lake City, Utah is northeast of the county. The county center is 6.9 miles North-Northwest of Ely nearer Lane City. The county is surrounded clockwise by Elko County and Utah and Lincoln, Nye, and Eureka counties.

United States Highway 6 enters the county from the east, Utah, and exits to the southwest, Nye County. United States Highway 50 is joined with United States Highway 6 from Utah, splits and heads west into Eureka County. United States Highway 93 travels north to south from Elko County to Lincoln County. The county is shaped like the State of Arizona. Ely is in the southern third of the county. Ely is the county seat and, as the only incorporated city, it is the largest city. It is 42.4% of the county population. The county seat is pronounced EE-LEE.
