The masonry Classical Revival courthouse was built in 1910. It is located on Idaho Street at 6th Street. Idaho Street is Interstate Highway 80 Business passing through the town. The building has been enlarged. William H. Weeks is the building designer. There was an 1869 version of the courthouse also in Elko, the only county seat. A County Administration Building was constructed in 2010. Elko County was created on March 5, 1869 from Lander County as the 12th county. The county and county seat names are Native American for “rocks piled on one another.” Elko County was the birthplace for 2 Nevada Governors, Morley I. Griswold and Edward P. Carville.

Two District Court Judges and Four Justice Court Judges serve Elko County (judicial.) Elko County is in the northeast corner of the state on the border with both Idaho and Utah. Reno, Nevada is southwest and Salt Lake City, Utah is east of the county. The county center is 44.4 miles Northeast of Elko nearer Deeth. The county is surrounded clockwise by Idaho and Utah and White Pine, Eureka, Lander, and Humboldt counties.

Interstate Highway 80 crosses the county from east to west from Utah, east, to Eureka County, west. United States Highway 93 passes north to south from Idaho to White Pine County. United States Highway 93 Alternate originates, joins Interstate Highway 80 eastward, splits and travels south into White Pine County. The county looks like a fat number 7. The City of Elko is in the southwest quarter of the county. Elko is the county seat and the largest city. It is 38.3% of the county population. The county and county seat are pronounced EL-KOE. This county is in the Elko Micropolitan Statistical Area.
