The Neo-Classical masonry building was built in 1916 as a school and remodeled in 1979 to become the courthouse. It sits at Humboldt Street and 3rd Street. Interstate Highway 80 Business is two blocks to the northeast of the courthouse. Frederic J. DeLongchamps is the building architect. The former Austin courthouse dates from 1872. Jacobsville (1861), Austin (1863), and Battle Mountain (1979) have all served as the county seat. Lander County was established on January 1, 1862 as the 9th county. The county is named for local engineer Frederick W. Lander. Battle Mountain is named for the local hill.

The county center is 51.8 miles South of Battle Mountain. The county is surrounded clockwise by Elko, Eureka, Nye, Churchill, Pershing, and Humboldt counties.

Battle Mountain is the county seat and the largest populated areas. It is 64.6% of the county population.
