The 1982 Modern courthouse replaced a brick blockhouse style facility constructed in 1916 which now houses the county administration. It is on 8th Street at Esmeralda Avenue. Dolven, Larson, and Daniels provided the courthouse designs. There was an earlier 1863 courthouse in Genoa. The county was formed on November 25, 1861 as one of the original counties (3rd county.) It is named for American statesman Stephen A. Douglas. Minden is named for Minden, Germany.
