A domed 1908 Beaux Arts courthouse sits on 4th Avenue Northeast at 2nd Street Northeast. North Dakota State Highway 13 is seven blocks to the south of the site. Buechner and Orth were the designers of this tan brick and masonry, columned structure. The county was created on January 4, 1873 as the 10th county. Grand Rapids was the county seat until 1886 when LaMoure assumed the role. The county and county seat names could be derived from the French word for “love’ or for State Legislator Judson LaMoure. The county is a flat rectangle. The City of LaMoure is located in the southeast part of the county. LaMoure is the county seat and the largest city. It is 18.6% of the county population.
LaMoure County government consists of a recorder, a sheriff, an attorney, and a treasurer (executive). It has 5 Commissioners (legislative.) Seven District Court Judges serve LaMoure, Barnes, Dickey, Eddy, Foster, Griggs, Ransom, Richland, Sargent, Stutsman, and Wells counties and a court clerk serves LaMoure County (judicial.) The county is in the southeast part of the state. Bismarck, North Dakota is northwest and Fargo, North Dakota is northeast of the county. The county center is 16.8 miles West-Northwest of LaMoure nearer Berlin. The county is surrounded clockwise by Barnes, Ransom, Dickey, McIntosh, Logan, and Stutsman counties.
The area of the county is 1147 square miles. It is 29 out of 53 in the state. It ranks 26 out of 53 in population in the state. It has a density of 3.6 persons per square mile making it 28 out of 53 in the state. La Moure County has 49.8% of its population in its incorporated areas. United States Highway 281 passes north to south in the county from Stutsman County to Dickey County. The county and county seat are pronounced LAMOER.
