The classic dark red brick High Victorian Gothic courthouse was built in 1884. The courthouse is on 8th Street Southwest, Rollin Avenue, 9th Street Southwest, and Odegard Avenue. The facility is on North Dakota State Highway 45 (9th Street Southwest.) F. B. Edwards provided the building designs. The structure was enlarged in 1960. The courthouse features a tower and veteran memorials on the grounds. A new county building augments the courthouse. The county was formed on February 18, 1881 as the 28th county with Cooperstown as the only county seat. Griggs County is named for Steamboat Captain, Alexander Griggs. The county seat is named for farmer Rollin C. Cooper.

Seven District Court Judges serve Griggs, Barnes, Dickey, Eddy, Foster, LaMoure, Ransom, Richland, Sargent, Stutsman, and Wells counties and a court clerk serves Griggs County (judicial.) The county is located in the east part of the state. Grand Forks, North Dakota is northeast and Fargo, North Dakota is southeast of the county. The county center is 5.6 miles Northwest of Cooperstown. The county is surrounded clockwise by Nelson, Steele, Barnes, Stutsman, Foster, and Eddy counties.
The area of the county is 708 square miles. It is 51 out of 53 in the state. It ranks 40 out of 53 in population in the state. It has a density of 3.3 persons per square mile making it 30 out of 53 in the state. Griggs County has 55.3% of its population in its incorporated areas. There are no Interstates or United States Highways in the county. The county is an overall rectangle. Cooperstown is located in the eastern third of the county. Cooperstown is the county seat and the largest city. It is 42.5% of the county population.
