The masonry Colonial Revival courthouse is on North Cooper Street between Yankie and Broadway streets.  New Mexico State Highway 90 is seven blocks to the east of the site.  The courthouse was built in 1929 using the designs of George Williamson.  There was an 1883 courthouse also in Silver City, the only county seat.  The stucco Administration Building is on Hilltop Street at United States Highway 180.  The county was established on January 1, 1868 from Dona Ana County as the 10th county.  The county was named for United States President Ulysses S. Grant.  The county seat is named for the discovery of silver near the city. 

Grant County government consists of a manager, a sheriff, a treasurer, an attorney, an assessor, and a clerk (executive).  It has 5 Commissioners (legislative.)  Three District Court Judges serve Grant, Hidalgo, and Luna counties (judicial.)  The county is in the southwest on the border with Arizona.  Las Cruces, New Mexico is southeast and Tucson, Arizona is southwest.  The county center is 5.6 miles Southwest of Silver City near Tyrone.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Catron, Sierra, Luna, Hidalgo counties and Arizona. 

The area of the county is 3966 square miles.  It is 14 out of 33 in the state.  It ranks 15 out of 33 in population in the state.  It has a density of 7.1 persons per square mile making it 17 out of 33 in the state.  Grant County has 52.2% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 10 crosses the extreme southern tip from Luna County to Hidalgo County, east to west.  United States Highway 180 enters the county from Catron County on the north and exits into Luna County on the southeast.  The county is shaped like a capital T with added “steps” on the southwest part.  Silver City is in the geographical northeast part of the county although in the larger part of the county it appears to be near the center.  Silver City is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 34.4% of the county population.  This county is in the Silver City Micropolitan Statistical Area.
