The Modern building is located on Central and Knetcht streets. New Mexico State Highway 502 is one block south. This dark red brick and concrete courthouse was built in 2010 to replace a 1967 structure. There was also a 1956 structure. WHPacific is the architect. An Administration building was also built in 2010. The county was created on January 1, 1949 from parts of Sandoval and Santa Fe counties as the 32nd county. Los Alamos has always been the county seat. The county and county seat both derive their names from the Spanish for “the poplars”. Los Alamos county and city have the same boundaries. Los Alamos County was the birthplace of 1 New Mexico Governor, Michelle L. L. Grisham.

The county center is in Los Alamos 1.5 miles East of the city center. The county is surrounded clockwise by Rio Arriba, Santa Fe, and Sandoval counties.
