Like all Census Areas, it is part of the Unorganized Borough created in 1961 and is governed at the state level therefore the State Capitol is shown.  A wooden building seems natural for a courthouse in Alaska.  The courthouse is located on Seward Street near Little Airport Road in this small village.  The census area and the seat get their names from Senator Paul Dillingham.  The census area was created in 1980 when the unorganized territories were divided into parts. 

Dillingham Census Area government is conducted at the state level.  Twenty-six Superior Judges and Fifteen District Judges serve the Third Judicial District which includes the Dillingham Census Area (judicial.)  A sheriff serves the Dillingham Census Area.  It is located in the southwest part of Alaska on the Bering Sea.  The center of the census area is 10 miles North-Northwest of Dillingham nearer Aleknagik.  The census area is surrounded clockwise by Bethel Census Area and Lake and Peninsula Borough and the Bering Sea. 

The area of the census area is 18334 square miles.  It is 10 of 30 in size.  It ranks 19 out of 30 in population in the state.  It has a density of 0.26 persons per square mile making it 23 out of 30 in the state.  Dillingham Census Area has 91.7% of its population in its incorporated areas.  The Village of Dillingham is in the extreme south of the census area.  Dillingham is the largest city in the census area.  It is 48.1% of the census area population.  There are no Interstates or United States Highways in this Census Area.
