Like all Census Areas, it is part of the Unorganized Borough created in 1961 and is governed at the state level therefore the State Capitol is shown.  A wooden building houses the courthouse.  It is located on Richardson Highway near Kimbal Street.  Tok also has a courthouse.  The census area was established in 1980 to divide the unorganized parts of the state.  The census area name is a geographical description of its locations southeast of Fairbanks, Alaska.  Delta Junction is on the Delta River at the junction of two major highways. 

Southeast Fairbanks Census Area government is conducted at the state level.  Four Superior Judges and Four District Judges serve the Fourth Judicial District which includes the Southeast Fairbanks Census Area (judicial.)  A sheriff serves the Census Area.  Delta Junction is in the far western part of the area.  Delta Junction is the largest city in the census area.  It is 13.5% of the census area population.

The area of the census area is 24831 square miles.  It is 5 of 30 in size.  It ranks 14 out of 30 in population in the state.  It has a density of 0.28 persons per square mile making it 22 out of 30 in the state.  Southeast Fairbanks Census Area has 14.7% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway A2 crosses from Fairbanks North Star Borough, north, to Valdez-Cordova Census Area.  Interstate Highway A4 begins in the census area and travels southwest into Denali Borough.  The overall shape of the Census Area is triangular with its border on Canada being the base leg.  The center of the census area is 65 miles Southeast of Delta Junction.  The Census Area is surrounded clockwise by Yukon-Koyukuk Census Area and Canada and Copper River Census Area, and Matanuska-Susitna, Denali, and Fairbanks North Star boroughs.
