The wood and metal building serves as the Borough courthouse.  The courthouse in King Salmon serves the court needs for the borough.  The borough is named for its geographical surroundings.  The borough seat is named for the fish.  It was created on April 24, 1989 as the 14th borough. 

Lake and Peninsula Borough government consists of a sheriff, financial director, a mayor, district attorney, and a clerk (executive).  It has 5 assembly members (legislative.)  Twenty-six Superior Judges and Fifteen District Judges serve the Third Judicial District which includes the Lake and Peninsula Borough (judicial.)  The borough is in the southwest part of the state southwest of Anchorage, Alaska.  It touches both the Pacific Ocean and the Bering Sea.  The center of the borough is 30 miles South of Bristol Bay.  The borough is surrounded clockwise by Bethel Census Area, Kenai Peninsula and Kodiak Island Boroughs and the Pacific Ocean and Aleutians East Borough and the Bering Sea and Bristol Bay Borough and Dillingham Census Area. 

The area of the borough is 23832 square miles.  It is 8 of 30 in size.  It ranks 27 out of 30 in population in the state.  It has a density of 0.06 persons per square mile making it 29 out of 30 in the state.  Lake and Peninsula Borough has 40.6% of its population in its incorporated areas.  It is shaped like a comma.  The borough seat is located outside of the borough to the west.  The largest city is in the northern quarter of the borough.  King Salmon is the borough seat while Newhalen is the largest city.  Newhalen is 11.3% of the borough population.  There are no Interstates or United States Highways in the Borough.
