The metal building houses the borough courthouse.  The courthouse is located on Max Italio Drive.  The borough and city are a combined government entity created on September 22, 1992 as the 17th borough.  Yakutat is Native American for “place where the canoes rest” referring to the Yakutat Bay. 

Yakutat City and Borough government consists of a sheriff, financial director, a mayor, district attorney, and a clerk (executive).  It has 6 assembly members (legislative.)  Five Superior Judges and Three District Judges serve the First Judicial District which includes Yakutat City and Borough (judicial.)  The borough includes all of the land from the large mainland part of Alaska down to Glacier Bay National Park.  Canada is its eastern border and the Pacific Ocean is its western border.  The center of the borough is 2 miles West of Yakutat in Monti Bay.  The borough is surrounded clockwise by Canada and Hoonah-Angoon Census Area and the Pacific Ocean and Chugach and Copper River Census Areas. 

The area of the borough is 7623 square miles.  It is 15 of 30 in size.  It ranks 30 out of 30 in population in the state.  It has a density of 0.09 persons per square mile making it 28 out of 30 in the state.  Yakutat Borough has 100% of its population in its incorporated areas.  The overall shape is a hairpin opened at the bay.  There are no Interstates or United States Highways in the Borough.  Yakutat and Yakutat Borough are the same.  The borough and the city are pronounced YA-KOO-TAT.
