A concrete and glass Modern building is the 2001 courthouse.  It is located on Wendall Avenue between Lacey and Noble streets.  Interstate Highway 2 is seven blocks southeast of the location.  Charles Bettisworth is the building architect.  An Administrative Center augments the courthouse.  The borough was established on January 1, 1964 as the 7th borough.  The borough and seat were named for Vice President Charles W. Fairbanks.  Fairbanks-North Star Borough was the birthplace of 1 Alaska Governor, William M. Walker. 

Fairbanks North Star Borough government consists of a sheriff, financial director, a mayor, district attorney, and a clerk (executive).  It has 9 assembly members (legislative.)  Four Superior Judges and Four District Judges serve the Fourth Judicial District which includes the Fairbanks North Star Borough (judicial.)  The borough is in northeastern Alaska.  The center of the borough is 6.2 miles East-Southeast of Fairbanks.  The borough is surrounded clockwise by Yukon-Koyukuk and Southeast Fairbanks Census Areas and Denali Borough. 

The area of the borough is 7335 square miles.  It is 16 of 30 in size.  It ranks 3 out of 30 in population in the state.  It has a density of 13.0 persons per square mile making it 2 out of 30 in the state.  Fairbanks North Star Borough has 34.5% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway A2 enters the borough from Southeast Fairbanks Census Area and terminates.  Interstate Highway A3 starts in the borough and exits southwest into Denali Borough.  The borough is shaped like a teapot.  Fairbanks is located in the southwest quarter of the borough.  Fairbanks is the borough seat and the largest city.  It is 34.0% of the borough population.  This borough is in the Fairbanks Metropolitan Statistical Area.
