Like all Census Areas, it is part of the Unorganized Borough created in 1961 and is governed at the state level therefore the State Capitol is shown.  The government court facility at Unalaska is a brick and wood structure.  This courthouse should be located at Broadway and 4th streets.  St. Paul also has a courthouse.  The census area was named for the Aleutians Island chain and the geographical location in the western part of this chain.  Unalaska is a derivative of the Russian “Ounalaska” which is a derivative of the Native American word for “this great land.”  This census area was created in 1980 to breakdown the unorganized borough of Alaska. 

There is no description for the census area since it consists of many islands in the Aleutians chain.  Aleutians West Census Area government is conducted at the state level.  Twenty-six Superior Judges and Fifteen District Judges serve the Third Judicial District which includes the Aleutians West Census Area (judicial.)  The census area is located in the extreme southwest reaches of the state.  The area borders the Pacific Ocean and the Bering Sea.  The center of the census area is 250 miles Southwest of Unalaska on Segnam Island.  The census area is surrounded clockwise by the Bering Sea and Aleutians East Borough and the Pacific Ocean.

The area of the census area is 4393 square miles.  It is 22 of 30 in size.  It ranks 20 out of 30 in population in the state.  It has a density of 0.49 persons per square mile making it 17 out of 30 in the state.  Aleutians West Census Area has 94.6% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Unalaska is located in the eastern part of the census area.  Unalaska is the largest city in the census area.  It is 81.4% of the census area population.  There are no Interstates or United States Highways in this Census Area.  The census area is pronounced E-LUE-SHUNS WEST.  Unalaska is pronounced OO-NA-LASS-KA.
