Like all Census Areas, it is part of the Unorganized Borough created in 1980 and is governed at the state level therefore the State Capitol is shown.  An old wooden structure looks the part for this section of Alaska and serves as the courthouse.  It is located on Front Street at Division Street.  The source for the census area and seat’s names is reportedly an error made by map makers who didn’t know the “name” of the town.  It was formed when the unorganized territory was divided. 

Nome Census Area government is conducted at the state level.  Two Superior Judges serve the Second Judicial District which includes the Nome Census Area (judicial.)  A sheriff also serves the Nome Census Area.  The census area is in the northwest part of the state on the Bering Sea.  The center of the census area is 25 miles Northeast of Nome.  The census area is surrounded clockwise by Northwest Arctic Borough, Yukon-Koyukuk and Kusilvak Census Areas and the Bering Sea.

The area of the census area is 22969 square miles.  It is 9 of 30 in size.  It ranks 10 out of 30 in population in the state.  It has a density of 0.43 persons per square mile making it 20 out of 30 in the state.  Nome Census Area has 97.4% of its population in its incorporated areas.  The census area’s shape is a hook surrounding Norton Sound and includes St. Lawrence Island in the middle of the Bering Sea.  There are no Interstate or United States Highways in the Census Area.  The City of Nome is in the west half of the Census Area.  Nome is the largest city in the census area.  It is 36.8% of the census area population.  The census area and seat are pronounced NOEM.
