Copper River Census Area (2,6518, Juneau (32,255), Glenallen* (439)

Like all Census Areas, it is part of the Unorganized Borough created in 1961 and is governed at the state level therefore the State Capitol is shown.  The courthouse in Glenallen serves this census area.  The facility is on Richardson Highway at Glen Highway.  Copper River was named for the nearby river and its ore deposits.  Glenallen is named for two Army explorers in the area, Captain Edwin Glenn and Lieutenant Henry T. Allen.  The census area was combined with the current Chugach Census Area until January 2, 2019 and called “Valdez-Cordova.”  The census areas were created when the unorganized territory was divided into more manageable divisions.  This census area takes up most of the southeast of the Alaska mainland not including the panhandle and borders Canada.  The overall shape is a glass facing down. 

Copper River Census Area government is conducted at the state level.  Twenty-six Superior Judges and Fifteen District Judges serve the Third Judicial District which includes the Copper River Census Area (judicial.)  A sheriff also serves the Census Area.  Glenallen is located near the center of the census area.  Glenallen is the largest populated area in the census area.  The center of the census area is Southeast of Glenallen.  The census area is surrounded clockwise by Southeast Fairbanks Census Area and Canada and Chugach Census Area and Matanuska-Susitna Borough. 

The area of the census area is 24692 square miles.  It is 7 of 30 in size.  It ranks 22 out of 30 in population in the state.  It has a density of 0.10 persons per square mile making it 27 out of 30 in the state.  Copper River Census Area has 0.0% of its population in its incorporated areas since it does not have any.  There are no Interstates or United States Highways in this census area.
