A wood and metal building in a remote city on the Arctic Ocean houses the borough courthouse.  It is located on Agvik Street at Kiogak Street.  The borough was established on July 2, 1972 as the 11th borough.  The name is a description of its geographical location.  The seat was named for Britain Sir John Barrow and its Native American version. 

North Slope Borough government consists of a sheriff, financial director, a mayor, district attorney, and a clerk (executive).  It has 11 assembly members (legislative.)  Two Superior Judges serve the Second Judicial District which includes the North Slope Borough (judicial.)  It is located in far north Alaska as far north as Alaska and the United States extends.  It touches the Bering Sea, the Arctic Sea, and Canada.  The center of the borough is 80 miles Southeast of Barrow on Teshekpuk Lake.  The borough is surrounded clockwise by the Arctic Sea and Canada and Yukon-Koyukuk Census Area and Northwest Arctic Borough and the Bering Sea. 

The area of the borough is 88824 square miles.  It is 2 of 30 in size.  It ranks 9 out of 30 in population in the state.  It has a density of 0.12 persons per square mile making it 26 out of 30 in the state.  North Slope Borough has 60.2% of its population in its incorporated areas.  This huge borough is shaped like a wide bowl of ice cream.  There are no Interstates or United States Highways in the Borough.  Barrow is located in the northwest part of the borough.  Barrow is the borough seat and the largest city.  It is 38.2% of the borough population.
