The wooden and metal borough building in Sand Point serves this borough.  The facility is off Red Cove Road.  The Alaska Court System assigns court activities to the Valdez courthouse for this borough.  The borough was named for the Aleutians Island chain and its geographical part of that chain.  Sand Point is named for a local geographical point.  The borough was formed on October 23, 1987 as the 13^th borough.

Aleutians East Borough government consists of a sheriff, financial director, a mayor, district attorney, and a clerk (executive).  It has 7 assembly members (legislative.)  Twenty-six Superior Judges and Fifteen District Judges serve the Third Judicial District which includes the Aleutians East Borough (judicial.)  The borough is located to the southwest of Anchorage, Alaska and includes both peninsula and islands.  The borough has the Pacific Ocean on its south and the Bering Sea on its north.  The center of the borough is 40 miles West-Southwest of Sand Point nearer King Cove.  The borough is surrounded clockwise by the Bering Sea and Lake and Peninsula Borough and the Pacific Ocean and Aleutians West Census Area.  Sand Point is the borough seat and Akutan is the largest city.  Sand Point is 17.0% of the borough population while Akutan is 46.3% of the borough population.  The borough’s name is pronounced E-LUE-SHUNS EE-ST.

The area of the borough is 6985 square miles.  It is 17 of 30 in size.  It ranks 20 out of 30 in population in the state.  It has a density of 0.49 persons per square mile making it 17 out of 30 in the state.  Aleutians East Borough has 98.6% of its population in its incorporated areas.  The borough was created in 1986 as Alaska started establishing boroughs as the 13^th borough.  There are no Interstates or United States Highways in this borough.  The shape of this borough cannot be described since it is a mixture of land and sea.  Sand Point is on an island near the eastern extent of the borough.  Akutan is on one of the western islands.
