The Modern courthouse is located on Mission Road at Kasheveroff Street in Kodiak.  The borough gets its name from the island.  Both the island and the city get their names for the Native American word for “Island.”  The borough began on September 24, 1963 as the 3rd borough. 

Kodiak Island Borough government consists of a sheriff, financial director, a mayor, district attorney, and a clerk (executive).  It has 7 assembly members (legislative.)  Twenty-six Superior Judges and Fifteen District Judges serve the Third Judicial District which includes the Kodiak Island Borough (judicial.)  The borough is located in the southern part of Alaska on both Kodiak Island and a small strip on the mainland.  The borough, especially the island, touches the Pacific Ocean.  The center of the borough is 12.2 miles Southwest of Kodiak nearer Women’s Bay.  The borough is surrounded clockwise by Kenai Peninsula Borough and the Pacific Ocean and Lake and Peninsula Borough. 

The area of the borough is 6689 square miles.  It is 18 of 30 in size.  It ranks 8 out of 30 in population in the state.  It has a density of 1.9 persons per square mile making it 9 out of 30 in the state.  Kodiak Island Borough has 47.1% of its population in its incorporated areas.  The jagged coastland of the island looks like a bowl of potato salad.  Kodiak is located on the northern part of Kodiak Island.  Kodiak is the borough seat and the largest city.  It is 42.6% of the borough population.  There are no Interstates or United States Highways in the Borough.  The borough and the seat are pronounced KOE-DEE-AK.  This borough is in the Kodiak Micropolitan Statistical Area.
