The Modern courthouse is glass and steel.  The courthouse is at 4th and Main streets.  The architect is unknown.  The borough and seat are named for miner Joe Juneau.  It was formed on September 30, 1963 as the 5th borough.  The Alaska state capitol is located in this borough. 

Juneau City and Borough government consists of a police chief, financial director, a mayor, district attorney, and a clerk (executive).  It has 8 assembly members (legislative.)  Five Superior Judges and Three District Judges serve the First Judicial District which includes Juneau City and Borough (judicial.)  The borough is located in the extreme southeastern part of Alaska on the border with Canada.  The center of the borough is 2 miles West of Juneau on Douglas Island.  The borough is surrounded clockwise by Haines Borough and Canada and Hoonah-Angoon Census Area. 

The area of the borough is 2704 square miles.  It is 25 of 30 in size.  It ranks 5 out of 30 in population in the state.  It has a density of 11.71 persons per square mile making it 3 out of 30 in the state.  Juneau Borough has 100% of its population in its incorporated areas.  The borough and seat are combined into a single government.  The borough is shaped like a shield facing southwest.  There are no Interstates or United States Highways in the Borough.  The borough and seat are pronounced JUE-NOE.  This borough is in the Juneau Micropolitan Statistical Area.
