The metal and stone courthouse for this borough is located on Main Street. The Borough Building is on 3rd Street. The borough and borough seat are named for Missionary Francina Haines. The borough was created on September 29, 1968 as the 10th borough.
Haines Borough government consists of a police chief, manager, a mayor, district attorney, and a clerk (executive). It has 6 assembly members (legislative.) Five Superior Judges and Three District Judges serve the First Judicial District which includes the Haines Borough (judicial.) The borough is located in the southeast part of Alaska on the border with Canada. The center of the borough is 3.2 miles West-Northwest of Haines on the Haines Airport. The borough is surrounded clockwise by Canada and Skagway Municipality, Juneau Borough, and Hoonah-Angoon Census Area.
The area of the borough is 2343 square miles. It is 27 of 30 in size. It ranks 25 out of 30 in population in the state. It has a density of 0.88 persons per square mile making it 13 out of 30 in the state. Haines Borough has 100% of its population in its incorporated areas. The City of Haines combined with the borough to form one government in 2002. The borough is shaped like a capital letter I and a smaller section like a ball. Interstate Highway 7 begins at the Canadian border and terminates at the City of Haines.
