Like all Census Areas, it is part of the Unorganized Borough created in 1961 and is governed at the state level therefore the State Capitol is shown.  The Hoonah City Hall serves as one of the courthouses for this Census Area.  It is located at Front and Marine.  Like all Census Areas, it is part of the Unorganized Borough created in 1980 when the unorganized borough was divided to better governed.  There is also a courthouse in Angoon. 

Hoonah-Angoon Census Area government is conducted at the state level.  Five Superior Judges and Three District Judges serve the First Judicial District which includes the Hoonah-Angoon Census Area (judicial.)  A sheriff serves the Census Area.  The census area includes all of the mainland and islands not part of Juneau, Haines, Yakutat, Sitka, Wrangell and Petersburg Boroughs and Prince of Wales-Hyder Census Area in this part of the Alaskan panhandle.  It also touches Canada and the Pacific Ocean.  The center of the census area is 15 North of Hoonah on an unnamed peninsula.  The Census Area is surrounded clockwise by Yakutat, Haines, and Juneau Boroughs and Canada and Petersburg and Sitka Boroughs.  Its name comes from the largest cities in the area.  Hoonah is Native American for “village by the cliff.” 

The area of the census area is 6555 square miles.  It is 19 of 30 in size.  It ranks 23 out of 30 in population in the state.  It has a density of 0.35 persons per square mile making it 21 out of 30 in the state.  Hoonah-Angoon Census Area has 92.3% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Hoonah is near the center of the Census Area.  Hoonah is the largest city in the census area.  It is 40.2% of the census area population.  There are no Interstates or United States Highways in the Census Area.
