The marble Federalist structure was built in 1825 and remodeled in 1903. The facility is on United States Highway 2 north of the village. The building was enlarged in 1988. Joseph Mott, Nathan Strong, and James Mott combined on the designs. Grand Isle County was formed on January 1, 1802 from parts of Chittenden and Franklin counties as the 12th county with North Hero as the only county seat. It is named for the main island contained in the county. The county seat recognizes Ethan Allen as the hero of the Battle of Lake Champlain.

The county is in the northwest corner of the state on the border with both Canada and New York. Burlington, Vermont is southeast and Montreal, Canada is north of the county. The county center is 1.2 miles Northwest of North Hero in Lake Champlain. The county is surrounded clockwise by Canada and Franklin and Chittenden counties and New York.

It has a density of 87.8 persons per square mile making it 2 out of 14 in the state. Grand Isle County has 8.2% of its population in its incorporated areas. United States Highway 2 enters the county from New York, northwest, and exits into Chittenden County, southeast. The county looks like a wiggly capital letter I. North Hero is located near the center of the county. Alburg is in the northwest quarter of the county. North Hero is the county seat and Alburg is largest city. North Hero is 12.9% of the county population although it is unincorporated. Alburg is the only incorporated city and is 8.2% of the county population. The largest city is pronounced ALL-BURG. This county is in the Burlington-South Burlington Metropolitan Statistical Area.
