The old wooden Colonial structure was erected in 1850. It is located on Courthouse Drive off of Bridge Street. United States Highway 3 is two blocks southeast of the location. S. G. Babcock designed the building. An 1804 courthouse previously served the county. The county was organized on November 5, 1792 from Orange County as the 9th county with Guildhall as the only county seat. Essex County is named for Essex, England. The county seat is named for a building on the town square.
Essex County government consists of a sheriff and 2 Assistant Judges. One Superior Court Judge serves Essex, Caledonia, and Orleans counties and One Superior Court Judge serves Essex and Caledonia counties. Essex County is in the northeast corner of Vermont. New Hampshire is across the Connecticut River to the east and Canada is on the northern border. Burlington, Vermont is southwest and Manchester, New Hampshire is southeast of the county. The county center is 21.4 miles North-Northwest of Guildhall nearer Ferdinand. The county is surrounded clockwise by Canada and New Hampshire and Caledonia and Orleans counties.

Guildhall is 4.4% of the county population while Island Pond is 12.7% of the county population. This county is in the Berlin Micropolitan Statistical Area.
