The Modern style dark red brick courthouse was built in 1951.  The courthouse is located on Brooklyn and Court Street in Rockville.  Connecticut State Highway 195 passes in front of the courthouse.  The architect is unknown.  There was a Criminal Court building constructed in 1995.  The county was formed on October 13, 1785 from parts of Hartford and Windham counties as the 8th and final county.  The county was named for the town which was named for Tolland, England.  Tolland County was the birthplace of 2 Connecticut Governors, John S. Peters and Wilbur L. Cross. 

The area of the county is 410 square miles.  It is 7 out of 8 in the state.  It ranks 7 out of 8 in population in the state.  It has a density of 366.6 persons per square mile making it 6 out of 8 in the state.  Tolland County has 0.0% of its population in its incorporated areas since there are no incorporated cities.  Interstate Highway 84 goes through the county from Massachusetts in the north to Hartford County in the west.  United States Highway 6 comes into the county from Windham County in the east and exits into Hartford County to the west.  United States Highway 44 crosses further north through the county in an east-west direction from Windham County to Hartford County. 

Tolland County doesn’t have a unified government as each township governs.  Nine Superior District Court Judges and Three Probate Judges serve Tolland County.  Tolland County is located in north central Connecticut on the border with Massachusetts.  The center of the county is 5.2 miles Southeast of Rockville.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Massachusetts, and Windham, New London, and Hartford counties.  The county is shaped like a drill pointing down.  Rockville is located in the western third of the county.  Storrs is located in the southeast part of the county.  Rockville is the county seat and Storrs is the largest city although they are unincorporated.  Rockville is 5.3% of the county population while Storrs is 10.6% of the county population.  The county is in the Hartford-West Hartford-East Hartford Metropolitan Statistical Area.
