The 1907 red brick courthouse is located on a square at Railroad, Church, McEachin, and Broad streets.  United States Highway 221 is Railroad Street in this part of town.  Alexander Blair III designed this Neo-Classical Revival structure.  The dome is now black and has a working clock.  The building features columns and veteran memorials are on the grounds.  Montgomery County was established on December 19, 1793 from Washington County as the 18^th county.  Various houses and churches served as county seat until 1813 when Mount Vernon became the seat.  The county is named for Revolutionary War General Richard Montgomery.  The county seat’s name comes from the home of President George Washington.  The county center is 7.1 miles East of Mount Vernon nearer Ailey. 

Montgomery County government consists of a manager, a sheriff, an administrator, a coroner, a clerk, and a tax commissioner (executive).  It has 5 Commissioners (legislative.)  Fifteen Superior Court Judges serve Montgomery, Baldwin, Ben Hill, Bleckley, Candler, Crisp, Dodge, Dooly, Emanuel, Greene, Hancock, Jasper, Jefferson, Johnson, Jones, Laurens, Morgan, Pulaski, Putnam, Telfair, Toombs, Treutlen, Twiggs, Washington, Wheeler, Wilcox, and Wilkinson counties and Four County Judges, court clerk, and county attorney serve Montgomery County (judicial.) The county is in southeastern Georgia between Savannah, Georgia, southeast, and Macon, Georgia, northwest.  The Oconee River forms its western border.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Treutlen, Toombs, Jeff Davis, and Wheeler counties. 

The area of the county is 245 square miles.  It is 123 out of 159 counties in the state.  It ranks 137 out of 159 in population in the state.  It has a density of 35.1 persons per square mile making it 116 out of 159 in the state.  Montgomery County has 42.3% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 221 goes north to south in the county from Treutlen County to Jeff Davis County.  United States Highway 280 crosses east to west from Toombs County to Wheeler County.  The county’s shape is a funnel.  Mount Vernon is located on the northwestern border.  Mount Vernon is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 23.0% of the county population.  This county is in the Vidalia Micropolitan Statistical Area.
